JOHN W. BYRD PIONEER AWARD FOR RESTORATIVE AND COMMUNITY JUSTICE

  Mark Umbreit, Ph.D., Founder/Director, Center for Restorative Justice and Peacemaking, University of Minnesota, School of Social Work


As a renowned author, scholar, and practitioner, Dr. Mark Umbreit is regarded as a leading spokesperson on restorative justice worldwide.  Dr. Umbreit is a prolific professor and passionate advocate of restorative justice, and embodies many of the qualities associated with John Byrd.  His tireless contributions to education, research, and practice have given rise to the establishment of varied forms of restorative justice in over 22 countries, and he has spread restorative justice by serving as a consultant/trainer for the U.S. Department of Justice.  Dr. Umbreit has stimulated interest and advanced the quality of restorative justice practices by creating training and educational materials, surveys, a video series and training manuals.  His exemplary and visionary achievements have contributed significantly to restorative justice policy development and he has furthered restorative justice in collaboration with government agencies, law enforcement and other justice systems.  He has spent nearly a quarter of a Century promoting, initiating, developing and facilitating community peace building, defining Dr. Mark  Umbreit as a true pioneer in the field of restorative justice.
